About

Grammy-nominated Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra performs a special concert to celebrate their new CD recording of Artistry, a tribute to legendary big band leader Stan Kenton and his Neophonic Orchestra. Combining the sounds of large ensemble jazz with symphonic colors and textures, The Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra performs at downtown Los Angeles’ REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater) on Friday, March 29, 2013 at 8:30 pm. REDCAT is located at 631 West 2nd Street (located in the Walt Disney Concert Hall Complex). Led by saxophone soloist Kim Richmond, the 24-piece orchestra, featuring expansive instrumentation that includes five woodwinds, four trumpets, four trombones, two French horns, Latin percussion and more, plays from its latest release, Artistry, an evening of free-swinging improvisation paying homage to “Kentonesque” jazz and Latin-style compositions, the size and scope of the master’s kinetic orchestration, rightfully known to music historians as the original “Wall of Sound.” Hubert Laws, solist flutist, is the special guest artist.

Artistry, on MAMA Records, is The Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra’s third CD which will formerly be released in May, but will be available for purchase at the REDCAT Concert. The ensemble includes: Kim Richmond, leader, composer/arranger, and alto saxophone; Alex Budman, Bob Crosby, Glen Berger, Sean Franz, and Bob Carr, Woodwinds; Bob O’Donnell, Ron King, Steve Huffsteter, and Brian Swartz, Trumpets; John Dickson and Stephanie O’Keefe, French Horns; Scott Whitfield, Joey Sellers, George McMullen, and Craig Gosnell, Trombones; Tuba, William Roper; Rhythm Section consists of Tom Hynes, guitar; Andy Langham, piano; Katie Thiroux, bass; Ralph Razze, drums; Dave Johnson and Scott Breadman, percussion.

Tickets are $20 ($16 for REDCAT members and Students); seating is general admission and tickets are available for purchase in-person at the REDCAT box office, by phone at 213-237-2800, or online at redcat.org. REDCAT’s box office is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from noon until 6 pm or two hours prior to curtain. Group, member, student and CalArts faculty/staff discounts available. REDCAT is located at 631 West 2nd Street, Los Angeles, 90012 (located in the Walt Disney Concert Hall Complex).
