Silveira’s reputation as a musician's musician has spread far and wide. In his 43-year-career, he is featured as guitarist, arranger, producer and music director in hundreds of albums by artists such as Herbie Mann, Elis Regina, Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento Hermeto Paschoal, Ivan Lins, João Bosco, Ney Matogrosso.
Silveira was born in Rio de Janeiro, where grew up surrounded by all kinds of Brazilian musical styles. He found inspiration in bossa nova, samba, and carnival, as well as the music of Baden Powell and Jimi Hendrix. After high school, he left Brazil to attend the Berklee College of Music. Then he moved to New York City, where he began to play with Herbie Mann, among others. He eventually made his way back to Brazil and became one of the most requested studio musicians in the country, recording hundreds of projects with Brazilian music icons, like Milton Nascimento e Gilberto Gil.
Silveira’s solo recordings also became quite popular among fans of the Brazilian jazz scene, as he began to explore his own music starting in the mid-'80s and continuing into the '90s. After recording his solo albums "Bom de Tocar" and "Ricardo Silveira" in the 80's, he was invited to record in the United States albums that are still played on North-American jazz radios to this day. Released by the label Verve Forecast, the albums “Long Distance” (1988), “Sky Light” (1989), “Amazon Secrets” (1990), and “Small World” (1992), consolidated his international career and showcased his talent both as a musician and composer. In 1989, he also recorded the first and only album with Banda Zil, and Toninho Horta invited him to produce his album “Moonstone” (Verve Forecast).
After Verve Forecast, Ricardo recorded "Storyteller" (1995) for the label Kokopeli, owned by flutist Herbie Mann.
In 2003, he recorded "Clara Clara" with Adventure Music, his label until today. That album was nominated for Best Instrumental Album in the Latin Grammy Award 2004 and was followed by three great releases: “Ricardo Silveira and Luiz Avellar Live Tocam Milton Nascimento” (2004), “Outro Rio” (2007) and “Till Tomorrow ”(2010).
2013 saw intense music production: in addition to concerts and recordings, Ricardo released two albums in the US: “RSVC”, a double album with Vinicius Cantuária, and “Atlânticos”, duo with guitarist Roberto Tauffic. Not to mention the relaunch of "Storyteller" by Adventure Music in North America.
In 2014, Ricardo Silveira formed his Organ Trio, fulfilling an old dream of his of exploring the sounds of a jazz trio based on the sound of a Hammond B3 Organ and they recorded an album.
In 2016, the album Cosmos featured a beautiful partnership between Ricardo Silveira & John Leftwich featuring Hubert Laws & Kiko Freitas. On the same year, he released the DVD Ricardo Silveira Quarteto live in Fortaleza at the famous Choro Jazz Festival.
In 2017, he released the album Simbora with Thiago Rabello on drums and Guto Wirtti on bass. Silveira continues to collaborate with diverse artists and perform regularly in Brazil and the world.
