Ron Carter, the august and highly influential double-bass player and composer, is now in his sixth decade of a jaw-dropping career. He rose to prominence as part of Miles Davis’ second quintet in the early ‘60s. That band, which also included Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Tony Williams, performed in the groundbreaking style Davis called "time, no changes," folding in components of free jazz without completely surrendering to the method. One of the most-recorded musicians in jazz history (over 2,000 sessions as leader or sideman), Carter’s sublime playing appears on some of the most significant Blue Note albums of the ‘60s—by Sam Rivers, Freddie Hubbard and McCoy Tyner, to name a few. Later, on Creed Taylor’s trailblazing CTI Records, Carter took post-bebop jazz into new directions with an equally impressive list of collaborators. A third generation was introduced to Carter’s mastery after his appearance on A Tribe Called Quest's influential hip-hop album The Low End Theory. With the recent creation of a scholarship named in his honor at Juilliard—where he has served as a professor in the jazz department since 2008—Carter’s legend as musician, composer and educator has been cemented.
