"A true legend, along with Ernie Andrews and
Andy Bey. A gorgeous singer from the tradition of Ella, Sarah, Carmen, and Billie...but who sounds like none of them...she sounds like herself."

KENIA visits L.A. for a one-night-only kickin' show featuring hot beats from her latest release, "On We Go."
"Once again, the vocalist has bridged jazz, international pop and Brazilian music and done so effortlessly, in one of her best works to date [On We Go]" (Jazz Corner).
Kenia is renowned for her ability to translate the complex rhythms of her Brazilian homeland into jazzy creations. Her beautiful, sultry voice invites you to revisit some familiar tunes and meet new songs - from gorgeous ballads to upbeat Brazilian forro, with some cool jazz on the side.
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Kenia Acioly moved to the U.S. in 1980. She made her recording debut as the featured vocalist on trumpeter Claudio Roditi’s Red on Red, produced by the legendary Creed Taylor, the producer of “Desafinado” and “The Girl from Ipanema.” Kenia established herself as one of the most popular Brazilian vocalists in the U.S.
On this occasion, Kenia will be accompanied by Liz Kinnon (keyboards), Mark Isbell (sax), Leo Nobre (bass), & Lucio Vieira (drums).

MARY STALLINGS

“On this special and poignant evening, the singer delivered a wonderful gift, making those present feel so much through her artistry. We can only hope that a new holiday tradition has begun in Prague: Jazz at the National Theater with greats like Mary Stallings.”
These were the words of the Czech music critic reporting on Mary Stallings’ appearance at the Prague National Theater on
December 23, 2011 – the first time any jazz artist has appeared at the iconic home of classical, opera and ballet since it was constructed in 1881! That the Prague people would select Mary Stallings to bring jazz to their hallowed hall speaks volumes on Mary’s voice and talent.
Mary Stallings is a classic example of how it takes time, musical seasoning and living a full life to mature as a vocalist and to address a lyric properly. While youthful instrumentalists may have something to say, Stallings brings a lifetime of emotional intelligence that enables her to truly inhabit a lyric.
Born and raised in San Francisco, the middle child of 11 siblings, Stallings started performing professionally before the age of 10 with her mother and two older sisters in a family gospel group. She got her first real taste of jazz at home, sitting in at rehearsals with her uncle, tenor saxophonist and bandleader Orlando Stallings.
Stallings’ career got off to an early start in the late ’50s and her supple voice landed her in rarified air: performing with such luminaries as Ben Webster, Cal Tjader, Earl Hines, Red Mitchell, Teddy Edwards, and the Montgomery brothers (Wes, Monk, and Buddy) in Bay Area night clubs such as Hungry i, The Purple Onion and El Matador.
Perhaps Stallings’ best-known recording was the 1961 Cal Tjader Plays, Mary Stallings Sings on Fantasy Records, which brought engagements in Tokyo, Manila and Bangkok along with work up and down the West Coast. She spent a year in the late 1960s performing in Nevada with Billy Eckstine, and toured South America with Gillespie’s band in 1965 and 1966. She has shared the bill with such luminaries as Joe Williams, Tony Bennett and Ella Fitzgerald. From 1969-1972, she enjoyed a successful three-year residency in the Count Basie Orchestra. After touring with the Basie orchestra, she devoted her time to raising her only child, R&B singer Adriana Evans.
Stallings returned to full-time singing in the early 1980s and returned to the recording studio with the 1994 release of I Waited for You on Concord Jazz with pianist Gene Harris. The album Spectrum followed in 1995 with pianist Gerald Wiggins and trumpeter Harry “Sweets” Edison, while her next album featured Monty Alexander as the pianist (Manhattan Moods, 1997), and 2005’s Remember Love was produced by Geri Allen, who played piano and organ and also provided all of the arrangements.
Mary Stallings has played at legendary Monterey Jazz Festival 1965, 1995 and 2003, the San Francisco Jazz Festival 2001, 2004, and 2006, a 2005 appearance with Clark Terry at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York, the 2007 Savannah Music Festival and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s, “The Birth of Cool.”

Dave and Jeff’s newest album “Come Together” is getting national exposure as well as regular local Airplay on Kjazz, and made the top 10 on Roots Music Report’s “Best Jazz Albums of 2017” chart.
"Two solid musicians join together in a unity of the groove. Askren blends the best of Kessel with the modernism's of Martino, while Benedict's sound compliments and augments the overall scope to a full spectrum sound. It's hard hitting playing with listenable sensibilities, and offeres much more than groove.
It is mature, seasoned and venerable music."
-Enmusic 5 Stars
"Askren and Benedict have eloquently achieved the intended goal of a "groove" album, which grooves through many styles, once again showing that groove is in the heart. A very enjoyable listen throughout."
-H.Allen William, Jazz Times
One happily grooving quartet always deserves another, and this one includes drummer Paul Romaine,
a childhood friend and musical partner in crime of Jeff's and DownBeat critic's choice of talent deserving of wider recognition. Also on the recording is Hammond B3 organist Joe Bagg,
who seduced Dave Askren and Jeff Benedict with a strategically placed Hammond B3 in the studio where It's All About The Groove was being recorded four years ago.

Vocalist
Anne Walsh
Nationally renowned vocalist Anne Walsh has an authentic style of singing that is neither purely jazz or purely pop but rather a fusion of the two. She’ll be joined by her pianist/husband Thomas Zink (who produced and arranged her first jazz release; the Grammy nominated “Pretty World”), bassist Hussain Jiffry, and drummer Chris Wabich. Walsh’s selections, pulled largely from her 3 CD releases, will take you from Bossa nova to Burt Bacharach, pulling from American and Brazilian classics as well as original pieces. She has received widespread praise for her lyricized vocal interpretations of instrumental jazz standards including Keith Jarrett’s “My Song”, Don Grolnick’s “Pools”, and Pat Metheny’s “So May It Secretly Begin” - in the latter case from the composer himself.

Ted Falcon has released eight CDs, performed with many Brazilian legends including Hermeto Pascoal, Hamilton de Holanda and Dominguinhos and regularly with his various musical projects including 3 Violinos, 3 Continentes, Gypsy Jazz Club and the duo Ted and Pablo, a partnership with harmonica player Pablo Fagundes. Their CD, Ted & Pablo, Transcontinental Music Express, was pre-nominated for best instrumental record of the year in Brazil. Ted has written and published several books about Brazilian choro, forró, and frevo. He is a former Adjunct Professor of Music at Whittier College and is currently a music teacher at the Silverlake Conservatory of Music.
Multi-instrumentalist, All-Ireland fiddle finalist and Ropeadope Recording artist Andrew “Finn the fiddler” Magill has watched his career surge ever since the 2016 release of his 2-disc concept album Roots (debuting at #46 on the Folk DJ charts) & Branches. On April 6th he will release Canta Violino! on Ropeadope Records which writes Airto Moreira of Miles Davis & Chick Corea fame: "Finn Magill displays a love and authenticity that can fool you into thinking he is from Brazil. His style is playful and light, yet soulful and passionate. Congratulations!”
Born in Rio de Janeiro, 7-string guitarist Nando Duarte, has become one of the leaders of Brazil’s popular music re-awakening with Dino 7 cordas as his mentor and Luiz Otávio Braga and Hélio Delmiro among his professors. His career as a seven-string guitarist led him to play, arrange, and produce some of the biggest names in Brazilian music, including Elza Soares, Gal Costa, João Bosco, Zeca Pagodinho, Marisa Monte, and Ney Matogrosso. His musical “Sambra” (2015) with Diogo Nogueira was the first Musical ever to be presented on stage at Rio de Janeiro’s New Year’s Eve party on Copacabana beach with over 2 million people and is now competing for a Cannes Golden Lion. April 28th ... Jazz Vocalist & Violinist CALABRIA FOTI
CALABRIA FOTI
Speaking about vocalist Calabria Foti (Ca-LA-bria FO-tee), legendary crooner
Johnny Mathis said, “Listening to a beautiful voice is one of my greatest pleasures in life, and Calabria Foti’s voice is some of the most beautiful and artistic music
I have ever heard!”
Born into a family of musicians and educators, Calabria was exposed to all kinds of music at a young age. She fell in love with Classic movies, the songs from
the Golden Age of Hollywood, and started performing by the time
she was 12 years old.
She has been called a “Master of improvisation and interpretation”.
Her recordings receive continuous airplay on adult standards and jazz radio formats throughout the world, and her voice has graced several major motion picture and television soundtracks. In 2014, Calabria recorded a duet (“Let’s Fall in Love”) with TV’s Seth MacFarlane, garnering a Grammy nomination.
Also an accomplished violinist, Calabria created the jazz violin sound for Fox TV’s
Lisa Simpson, and performed the virtuosic violin solo for the long-running theme to PBS’ Great Performances. She has also recorded CDs with Barbra Streisand,
Michael Buble, Steve Tyrell, Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole, and Paul McCartney.
Ms. Foti can be heard occasionally as guest host of “Siriusly Sinatra” on Sirius/XM radio, where she enthusiastically plays and discusses the music she loves so much.
